Once on the left bank we will explore the Esplanades and Hotel des Invalides, the famous burial site of Napoleon Bonaparte. Followed by a walk down the 7th arrondissements most picturesque streets before we make our way one of our favorite market – Rue Cler. Breakfast Buffet, Dinner
Let’s begin our day by taking a comfortable train ride 30 minutes outside of Paris to visit the splendor of Vaux le Vicomte.
Vaux le Vicomte is one of the largest privately owned castles in France. A masterpiece of 17th century architecture and garden design, itself the original model for the Palace of Versailles. On this day, we will travel to this magnificent baroque chateau and experience the splendor of its lights and sumptuous decorations that give this beautiful castle a wonderfully illuminating glow.
Christmas is particularly magical at the chateau. The path to the entrance is lined with snow-dusted pine trees, and classical choir music echoes from the front door. Each of the stately salons are illuminated with Christmas trees and decorations. In the Grand Salon, a towering tree—a whopping eight meters high and covered in more than 5,000 ornaments—almost reaches the ceiling. The smell of nutmeg and spices floats through the air, and fires crackle in the majestic fireplaces. You can even imagine the merry feasting of yesteryear as you gape at the dining table, dressed to the nines with Christmas porcelain and tree-shaped towers of macarons.
A truly magical experience not to be missed!
This morning we begin our adventure on the quaint island of Île de la Cité, an oasis from the rush of the city that remains romantically frozen in the 17th century. Here we can visit the island’s focal point the Cathedral of Notre Dame, arguably the most stunning gothic cathedral in the world—and undoubtedly the most famous. As we continue, we will stop along the way to admire the Conciergerie, a former prison that housed Marie Antoinette before her execution. It will also be a treat to visit the small, uncrowded residential park known as the Place Dauphine which has managed to avoid being overrun by masses of tourists. We will make our way the Hôtel de Ville, the hidden village of St. Paul, meander through Le Marais’ dizzying network of hidden courtyards, provocative galleries, and ivy-covered boulangeries before ending our day in what many consider to be the most beautifully built square in Paris, Place des Vosages.
The rest of the afternoon and evening are at your leisure. Dinner is on your own, however feel free to join us – we would love your company.
